Notes: 27th Jan: Gigi has been caught. She is safe and doing well. Special thanks to Amy Brown-Epling for feeding her and to Becky Randolph and Tera Gardner for buying a live trap today to set up on Amy's porch. It was a huge success and we are so thankful to these ladies. We are going to let GiGi have some quiet time and to de-stress with Becky and Tera and we will proceed from there after she gets some structure and safe feeling back in her life. Thank you everyone for the shares and the love. GiGi is a blessing!

Gigi and Sissy are a bonded pair so we would like them to go to a home together. They are currently in a foster home but if you are interested in giving them a home together, contact us on so that we can arrange a meeting with the foster family.

To adopt you must be at least 18 years of age and provide a current ID.

You must complete an Adoption Application form and pass reference checks before you can take a dog home.

See the Adoption Information here.

Most of our dogs are strays, therefore we can only guess whether they are good with other animals or children by observing the behavior of the animal in the kennel and their interaction with the shelter staff.

  • Adoption fee for a dog is $100 and for a cat is $50 (cash or check, non-refundable). Fee includes spay/neuter surgery, first vaccines including Rabies, worming, flea treatment and for dogs a microchip. All animals are spayed/neutered when old enough.
  • Dogs can be adopted out of state with the proper identification required (see below), unless they have not been spayed/neutered, in which case they are restricted to residents of Mason and adjacent counties (Mason, Cabell, Putnam, Jackson County). West Virginia law requires that all dogs and cats adopted from the animal shelter are spayed/neutered.
  • To adopt a dog you must be 18 years of age or older.
  • You must provide a picture ID with a current address at the time of the adoption.
  • Each pet is required to be vaccinated for rabies within seven days of adoption, if it is four months of age or older. Rabies vaccination is required for each pet, upon turning four months of age.
  • Every new owner of a pet adopted from Mason County Animal Shelter shall have the pet sterilized within thirty days of the pet turning six months of age, or within thirty days if the pet is over six months of age.
  • Out of state adoptions must be spayed or neutered before leaving West Virginia.
  • Return of the proper paperwork (sterilization and rabies certificates) is required within seven days of sterilization.
  • State law requires that all dogs and cats be vaccinated for rabies.
